It's kinda bizarre that we all of a sudden have new icons like this, and almost everyone's opinion on them has been mixed at best - a huge visual update like this seems more fitting for an alternate admin theme.
Scott, also the legacy look could be made into a plugin or theme so people who prefer it can continue with it. Any change we make to the admin, where people spend countless hours every day, will naturally have resistance. We saw it in 2.7 and 2.5 with the big changes, but also trivial ones like when we introduced blue to the admin in the early days. To me the important thing is are we building a visual vocabulary we can build on for the next 3-5 years. I don't really care about whether "flat" is a trend or not, it's more about an elegant reduction of our visual elements to streamline superfluous elements, lines and iconography that work equally well at small and large physical sizes that the proliferation of non-PC devices is going to bring to our user base. I'm open to other ideas or approaches about a visual language that solves those same problems, but our current status quo does not.

Thats a good point (and an excellent article). In the long run rebuilding the admin theme with LESS is very beneficial but right now WP doesn't even ship with LESS. It will take a while before we get all of the pieces in place to build anything /w LESS. We could create a new admin theme in the near future and then convert it to LESS when that becomes an option.
I love the flat "less is more" icon and admin approach. and putting the old icons into a plugin for people who still want them. Plugin and theme authors will just have to follow suit and modify their icons, just like how they have to update code. I dont see that as a huge issue.
Implementation: I like @joen's idea of it being an iconofont, which will bring us more toward a skin-able admin. Pluses: The ability to modify icon color easily- ESPECIALLY for High-Contrast themes. The ability to modify icon scale: to easily make a theme for people with eyesight issues.
